Overview
Celebrating their 13th anniversary, The Boogie Munstars Family is a competitive breakdancing crew based in Kansas City, Missouri. They have won numerous competitions as well as helped establish and grow the dance community in KC through classes, workshops, and open public training sessions. For this project, I worked closely with Jonathan Wolf Pitcairn (Co-founder of the crew) to help coordinate this project. Although the event was canceled due to COVID-19, the ticket sales had doubled from their last event and they sold out of their merchandise.
Problem
For their 11th anniversary, The Boogie Munstars hosted an event, organized and funded by themselves. However, because of this, the event was not as well advertised and the attendance was lower than expected. They decided not to put on an event for the 12th anniversary but faced their 13th anniversary with renewed determination.
Opportunity
Create visual assets to be used to help advertise and promote the event in order to reach more people who aren’t break-dancers and increase attendance from the last event. Assets also include apparel design that will be used to help fundraise for the event and establish unity between the crew and the community.
Process
I started with some rough sketches and Wolf ultimately decided to do 3 posters to have some options when it came to promoting the event. The inspiration for the posters came from two places, skateboard and death metal posters. Skateboarding because that’s how most of the crew members met in their youth and death metal because one of their crewmates is in a death metal band.
